Calhoun County I-94 Wrong-Way Crash: Arrest, Two Hurt
At approximately 3:20 a.m., deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle collision near mile marker 107 on eastbound Interstate 94. A 50-year-old Lansing man was traveling west in the eastbound lanes when his pickup collided head-on with another vehicle carrying two occupants. Both passengers in the eastbound car sustained injuries and were promptly transported to Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall for treatment and evaluation.
Upon arrival, law enforcement determined the pickup driver was “highly intoxicated,” and chemical testing confirmed that alcohol was a contributing factor. He was taken into custody at the scene and later booked into the Calhoun County Jail on charges related to operating under the influence and reckless driving.
The crash forced all eastbound lanes of I-94 in that vicinity to close for roughly an hour, according to Michigan Department of Transportation traffic reports. Clearing debris and ensuring safe passage required coordinated efforts from multiple agencies, including Marshall City Police, Emmett Township Department of Public Safety, the Marshall Township Fire Department, and the Marshall Area Fire Fighters Ambulance Authority.
Deputies continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the collision. Anyone with information is urged to contact Lieutenant Curtis Smith at 269-781-0880 or submit an anonymous tip via Silent Observer at 269-964-3888.
Victims of this kind of serious crash may face significant medical bills, lost income, rehabilitation costs, and ongoing pain and suffering. Under Michigan law, injured parties injured by a negligent or intoxicated driver can pursue compensation for past and future medical expenses, diminished earning capacity, vehicle repair or replacement, and non-economic damages such as emotional distress and decreased quality of life.
