Motorist Injured in Collision: In a remarkable act of bravery, several bystanders leaped into action to rescue a motorist whose vehicle had veered off the road and into Lake St. Clair on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. near Lake Front Park on Lakeshore Drive, close to Marter Road, south of Nine Mile Road. According to St. Clair Shores police, “Before officers’ arrival, bystanders had assisted in getting the sole occupant out of the vehicle.”
The driver, reportedly a female, was promptly transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. Authorities suspect that a medical emergency may have contributed to the vehicle crashing into the lake. As of now, further details about the driver’s condition, age, and residence have not been released.
Coast Guard officials, who arrived at the scene to secure the area and keep other vessels away from the submerged vehicle, commended the bystanders’ swift response. It appears that up to four individuals jumped into the water to assist the driver, a heroic effort that likely prevented a tragic outcome. A tow truck was subsequently called to retrieve the car from the lake.
The incident is currently under investigation by the St. Clair Shores police traffic bureau. The area around Lake Front Park, though owned by the city of Grosse Pointe Woods, falls within Macomb County jurisdiction.
